Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die.

It is interesting that Judah still has numerous priests and prophets, yet the nation was continuing in it's evil way (vs 3). What were these people telling the nation of Judah? Here they were priests and prophets and were probably caught up in the same "evil way" that the nation was in. No wonder they didn't like to hear what Jeremiah was saying! It's difficult for a religious body to move in a better direction than the direction its leaders are taking it. Note that when Jeremiah prophesied against the house of the king (Jer 22:1), he did not get the same severe reaction - they bore it patiently.
The priests and the prophets were the salt of the earth, but the salt had become tasteless (Matt 5:13), and worthy to be trampled underfoot.
Jeremiah's speech, instead of waking them from corruption, pushed them more towards corruption.
People in sin, who know they are in sin, don't want to be confronted with it - they will attack the messenger rather than have to deal with their sin. They like their sin! They won't like the consequences, though! Is there sin that you are holding onto in this same way?
Shall I be upset at the man that tells me of my danger, while I have an opportunity of avoiding it, and not thank him for it, as the greatest kindness he could do me? What if you were on a plane, and a man told you it was about to crash, and offered you a parachute? Would you complain against him because you weren't going to reach your destination?
Isn't it interesting how people will gladly thank you for protecting them from physical harm, but not spiritual? And which is the greater danger? People are only afraid of danger that they can sense or visualize.
But then, some know the danger, and refuse to give up harmful habits, like the person who had a tracheotomy and continued to smoke!
Also it is interesting to see people who are very familiar with the gospel and yet, for unknown reasons, never embrace it (e.g. Larry King).
