It's interesting that before Jesus was known, there already was a disturbance in the region, enough to make the priests and scribes (layers) go check it out. John's preaching was so strong that some were asking if he was the Christ (vs 20), Elijah (vs 21), or the Prophet (vs 21). He denied being any of these.
