John 1:21 - Additional Comments
The prophesy of the coming of Elijah is in Malachi 4:5. Here John denies it, but later Jesus says that John was Elijah who was to come (Matt 11:14, 17:10-12, Luke 1:17).
The prophesy of the coming of the Prophet is in Deut 18:15-18. Some later thought Jesus was this Prophet - John 7:40, Matt 16:14. Jesus said John was more than the prophets - Matt 11:9-11.
I expect there was no real interest in the priests and scribes in looking for the truth - they were merely sent by the Pharisees (vs 24) to investigate another person's claim to be the Christ. They admit this in vs 22.
