John 1:23 - Additional Comments

This could have been a temptation for pride for John. Luke 1:15 says his father is told John would be "great in the sight of the Lord", and John probably grew up knowing this. Yet, this was John's attitude - "He must increase, but I must decrease." (John 3:30), and John says he is not even worthy to untie his sandals (vs 27).
This verse contains a quote from Isaiah 40:3.
John does acknowledge now that he is in a special role - he is fulfilling prophesy. If that is true, he must be of God - and therefore they will need to pay much attention to what he has to say, because it is truth. Even beyond this knowledge, John get directions straight from God - see vs 33 - "He who sent me".
Note that Jesus is the Word (vs 14), and John is the voice pointing to the Word.
What does it mean to "make straight the way of the Lord"? To give Him and open road in which to work. Have you made straight the way of the Lord in your life, or are you fighting Him in the work He is trying to do? Here is another voice declaring "make straight the way of the Lord!" because that is what God wants in you.
