It was customary for the servant to wash the feet of guests to remove the dust. The disciples were too proud to perform this menial task; the Lord took the position of the servant. He gave this example of humility.
1 Tim 5:10 talks of the quality of the humble, servant's heart of a widow who washes the feet of visitors who are Christians.
