John 14:2 - Additional Comments

Another reason not to be troubled (verse 1) - through fulfilled prophesy, God has proved to be trustworthy. And Jesus is prophesying again here. He is saying don't worry, I have the future in My hands, and I have your future in My hands (Jer 29:11). He says the same to us.
Also, nothing brings peace like the hope of heaven. No trouble on this life compares to the glory of heaven. This is what turns cowards into heroes and martyrs (see Rev 21:8).
The term "house" means a house, a home, a family dwelling place.
The term "mansions" is also translated "rooms" or "dwelling places". It is a place to live, abide. It's also mentioned in 14:23, where it is translated "home" or "abode".
What an interesting comparison - heaven is called "My Father's house". This isn't an inn or temporary living quarters, but permanent. And we are not invited next door, or to the neighborhood, but into His very house.
The disciples had left their homes to be with Jesus, who had no place to lay His head (i.e. to call home) - Luke 9:58. But they are promised they will be getting a home.
Heaven certainly is so much more than what we vision as a house. But Jesus was saying we are going to go live with God, where He lives, and there is plenty of room there. So this says that we will go live with God as a family, to His dwelling place. This is where Jesus was about to go.
Jesus is preparing them for His departure. He's telling them that even though He is going away, He going to a place where they are welcome, and there's plenty of room. And they even know how to get there (verses 4-7).
When He says He would have told them if there was a limit to the number of people who can enter His kingdom, He is also stating that what He has told them is sufficient. We do not need to worry that important gaps are missing from our theology because of what has not been included in the Bible, His Word. It gives us a sufficient view of God, Jesus, and all Christian theology.
So, Jesus is preparing heaven for us. It will be so different, so amazing. He is making sure it will be perfect when we arrive. But, how is he doing this preparation? What preparation did He do before our current universe was created? Is the preparation simply that He died for us and will be there to be our Advocate? Eventually, He will prepare a new earth for us, and we will dwell there.
