John 15:4 - Additional Comments

Since He told them He was leaving (13:33), they may have been tempted to go back to follow Moses. Jesus makes it clear He is the One they need to follow. But not just follow -- they need to get their sustenance from Him, their very health and livelihood, even their existence. A branch cannot survive apart from the vine.
So we are with Christ. We dwell, we abide with him. He is ever-present. From Him not only do we get nourishment, but He defines who we are.
To abide has to do with the concept of 'being' instead of 'doing'. There are many things we can do for Him, but when we are abiding in Him, we are doing the things that God has called us to, but we are doing it in His strength. The relationship is more important than the things we do. The closer we are to Him, the clearer we hear His voice, and the more He strengthens us to do what He asks.
To abide in Him, build your relationship with Him.
