John 16:2

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

Interesting that there are those who feel they are doing work for God but are actually hindering His work. Wow, even up to and including killing the disciples of Christ! We must be careful to not equate religious zeal always with being a good thing.
Since so much of their lives were wrapped around their Jewish-ness, being cast out is not just from the synagogue but from many aspects of their social life. They would be outcasts.
The 12 apostles, except John, were all put to death.

Note that Paul thought he was doing God's service at Stephen's stoning.
Villains are never justified just by putting their villanous acts with reference to God.
