John 16:23

And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

They had the same problem back then. They asked for nothing, and they got it. Jesus told them to ask and they would receive.
Notice that the asking had to be in Jesus' name.
