Nicodemus was a Jewish Rabbi, a rich man, a ruler, a Pharisee, and a member of the Sanhedrin. The Sanhedrin was the supreme council and court of justice among the Jews, consisting of 71 members.
Being a Pharisee, he was learned contrary to the spirit of Christianity.
