John 4:14 - Additional Comments

See John 7:37-39. The living water refers to the Holy Spirit. The living water was the life-giving gift of the indwelling, presence of God by the Spirit, Who produces a continual refreshing and sustaining source of strength & blessing.
Do we realize this living water is what we have in Christ, through His Spirit? The thirst of our soul has been forever quenched.
Beyond the satisfaction of the need for God in our soul, fulfilled when we became a Christian, now whenever we are in need, whenever we need spiritual nourishment, we need to come to Jesus, the source of nourishment, of living water (see again John 7:37-39).
If it hasn't been feeling like you are being nourished and filled lately, if you are facing spiritual dryness, where you are having difficulty having energy for God, or making time for Him, consider this -
- First, examine yourself (Psalm 139:23-24), and confess and purge sin. Heb 12:1 tells us to "lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us".
- While times of spiritual drought can be frightening or disconcerting, realize that these times are normal. Most Christians go through a drought to get them to be spiritually where they can be best used by God.
- God is calling us to come deeper into His life. The problem is that just when we are about to move forward in faith, we feel like we are going backward, so we want to quit. Realize this is important and necessary for God's next phase of your spiritual walk. This is a time of spiritual transformation. God wants to build you up and take you spiritually where you have not gone before. Your faith is actually becoming deeper.
- If there is pain or trials involved, be careful not to back down and step away. Certainly gold at room temperature is comfortable, but gold cannot be refined if it's out of the fire. Many Christians just step away from the fire at this point, and never become what God wants them to be.
- The basic problem is that, while we are Christians, we are still basically selfish. God wants to draw us to set aside self
- Avoid trying to get your high in anything but God, like work, sports, family, etc. In drought you must go to the water. God uses it to draw you to Him and nothing else. Nothing else will quench the thirst. God will use it so you toss aside all the vain and empty things that you use to get fulfillment, so you must get it from Him. It must be God as the source of joy and fulfillment.
- After dealing with sin, what else should you do? Read the Word regularly. Pray regularly. You cannot restore your relationship unless you work on the relationship. You must trust the Lord through this. You must look to Him and remember that He loves you greatly and will never forsake you. In this, your faith will be perfected, your character improved, your walk strengthened, and you will be prepared for the tasks ahead that the Lord has called you to encounter. Make sure through all this you offer praise and thanksgiving to the Lord.
