Apparently the miracle so change the man's appearance that his neighbors, who had seen him for years, did not recognize him. This could also mean they paid so little attention to him that they weren't sure it was him. Who do you come in contact with every day that has great needs, but to whom you pay so little attention to that you may not recognize them in other surroundings?
