Joshua 1:1 - The Message

After the death of Moses the servant of God, God spoke to Joshua, Moses’ assistant:   "Moses my servant is dead. Get going. Cross this Jordan River, you and all the people. Cross to the country I’m giving to the People of Israel. I’m giving you every square inch of the land you set your foot on—just as I promised Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon east to the Great River, the Euphrates River—all the Hittite country—and then west to the Great Sea. It’s all yours. All your life, no one will be able to hold out against you. In the same way I was with Moses, I’ll be with you. I won’t give up on you; I won’t leave you. Strength! Courage! You are going to lead this people to inherit the land that I promised to give their ancestors. Give it everything you have, heart and soul. Make sure you carry out The Revelation that Moses commanded you, every bit of it. Don’t get off track, either left or right, so as to make sure you get to where you’re going. And don’t for a minute let this Book of The Revelation be out of mind. Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then you’ll get where you’re going; then you’ll succeed. Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take."

Joshua 1:1 - Additional Comments

The book begins, not of Joshua's life, but of his reign as ruler of Israel. Joshua, with Caleb, after spying, reported that God could lead His people into the Promised Land (Num 14:6-8). He was 40 years old at the Exodus out of Egypt, he was 80 years old when he received his commission as Moses' successor, and he was 110 years old at his death (Josh 24:29). He was 40 years younger than Moses.
In this chapter,
- God appoints him to the charge instead of Moses, gives him his commission, full instructions, and great encouragements (1:1-9).
- Joshua accepts the position, and begins immediately to work in that role, giving orders to the officers (1:10-11) and particularly to the 2 1/2 tribes (1:12-15).
- The people agree to it, and take an oath of obedience to him (1:16-18).
It says here that Joshua was Moses' assistant. God had selected Joshua to be Moses' assistant - Num 27:18. It appears God selected Joshua, because his character was what God was looking for - he was a man in whom was the Spirit. We need to build our character, so we are ready for whatever assignments God gives us. See Paul's perspective on God's selection of Him - 1 Tim 1:12. Is one of the reasons you are working on your character to be prepared to be used by God? We often build our character because of what it gives to us (less pain in life), but God wants us to do it for Him.
Joseph was a faithful assistant and servant, and he was rewarded with a leadership position in due time. We need to be faithful in whatever position we are in, even if it is not a leadership position. We need to do all our work for God (Col 3:23-24), being confident that there is value for Him in it, no matter what we do. Compare this to how Isaiah, one of our great prophets, felt at one time - Isaiah 49:4.
This shows what God had to say to Joshua. How did God speak? Some speculate in a dream - see Job 33:14-16. How did Joshua know that it was God?
God probably waited until after the thirty days of mourning for Moses (Deut 34:8) ended before speaking to Joshua.
