Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Jude 1:3 - Additional Comments
"Contend" means to fight for. Jude found it necessary to encourage them, not to hold onto the faith, but to contend for the faith. See also 1 Peter 3:15 -- we must always be ready to defend the faith. Jude was compelled to draw them to stand up for the faith, with passion ("earnestly"), probably amidst much opposition or distortions.
This epistle seems to have been written to all Christians (see verse 1). Jude must have been seeing a trend where Christians were not standing up for the faith. Would he see the same thing today?
What Jesus did is complete. It is "once for all". It is lacking nothing, and there is no need to add to His salvation.
