Why is Jeremiah feeling so afflicted, so that he has to avoid people, roaming the country? How would you feel if -
- Your nation were overrun by enemies,
- Your home town destroyed,
- You were marched away as a captive to a foreign land?
He feels the affliction both from God (vs 13) and the people (vs 14).
He feels no prosperity (vs 17), and peace is so far off he can even see the light of it (vs 17).
Much of this affliction is due to Jeremiah's speaking the truth, despite strong opposition. Those who stand up for God, for truth, should expect opposition (Luke 6:22-23).

Gall is a poisonous plant, probably the poppy. The poppy seed is edible, but the rest of the plant is poisonous.
