Luke 10:38 - Additional Comments

Note that Jesus did not just visit the rich and large cities, but poor and small villages as well. This village is Bethany (John 11:1). Most certainly Jesus was not alone, for his disciples followed Him everywhere, except when He would go off to prayer (Matt 14:23). By welcoming Jesus into her house, she was also probably welcoming the disciples, too.
The word for "welcomed" or "received" means "to admit under one's roof, i.e. entertain hospitably". She was being hospitable, making them feel welcome in her home. What an example - she went out of her way to not only invite them, but when they arrived, to make them feel welcome in her home. May we be hospitable so people always feel welcome in our homes.
Jesus was so poor he need the generosity of others for food and shelter - He had no permanent home once His ministry started (Matt 8:20). Yes, Jesus was King of the Jews (Zech 9:9).
This was when Jesus first meets Martha and Mary. There are a few people to who Jesus had a special affection (like John), and Jesus gets a special affection for Martha, Mary, and Lazarus (John 11:5), and often visits them.
This is called Martha's house, because it is speculated that she is a widow. Note that it was expensive to invite Christ and his disciples, but she made no mention of the cost, to make them feel welcome. She did not care for cost or danger, for it was getting potentially dangerous to associate with Jesus at that time, and so near Jerusalem.
