Jesus was taking a time out for prayer, as He often did. The disciples realized that just as prayer played a vital role in John the Baptist's life, and in the life of the Lord, so it should be their own practice as well.
They waited until Jesus was was finished. They saw how important it was in His life, so they wanted the same in their lives.
Many times Jesus teaches because He sees a need, but this time He waited for them to ask, knowing they would.
We learn here that prayer was important to John the Baptist. We never saw John take time for prayer, or teaching about prayer. On what other great subjects of truth did he teach?
This prayer is not the Lord's Prayer, but the disciple's prayer (see also Matt 6:9-13). This is a model prayer to show us how to pray, not a pattern to be repeated in vain repetition.
