This appears to be the first time the apostles tried to defend Jesus with force. That would have been comical and tragic - the apostles defending Jesus against the Roman solders. Regardless, they continued to not have a clue as to who Jesus is and what He was capable of doing. Those soldiers had no control over Jesus unless He let them. In fact, in Matt 26:53, Jesus says he could have summoned 12 legions of angels (72,000) to come to his aid.
