When Peter realized His failure to Jesus, this is the result. Effectively this is his repentance. Compare this to Judas, when he looked back on what he had done - He was remorseful, but he hung himself (Matt 27:3-5). There is a difference between remorse (feeling bad about something) and repentance (asking God's forgiveness about something).
