Luke 24:13 - Additional Comments

- "that same day" -- the day of the resurrection, also the day after Passover.
- It is very likely that these 2 were traveling back home, because the events in Jerusalem surrounding Jesus were over. They probably waited to leave until after Passover. Earlier that day they had heard stories that Jesus was alive (see verses 22-24), but probably doubted it, otherwise they may have stayed to see Him.
- The "seven miles" is, in the Greek, sixty furlongs.
- furlong ( Encyclopedia Britannica Article):
"old English unit of length, based on the length of an average plowed furrow (hence "furrow-long," or furlong) in the English open- or common-field system. Each furrow ran the length of the 40 ' 4-rod acre, or 660 modern feet. The standardization of such linear units as the yard, foot, and inch -- begun in Edward I's statute of 1303 -- recognized the traditional sizes of rods, furlongs, and acres as fixed and therefore simply redefined them in terms of the newly standardized units. Thus, the furlong, often measured as 625 northern (German) feet, became 660 standard English feet, and the mile, always 8 furlongs, became 5,280 feet. Today, the furlong is used almost exclusively in horse racing."
- Since the mile is 8 furlongs, sixty furlongs is 7.5 miles. This would be about a 2 hour walk.
