It appears these 2 did not believe Jesus was alive; otherwise they probably would have stayed in Jerusalem. Also, how they spoke in verse 21, that they "were" hoping, indicating they no longer had that hope. What should have been news greeted with elation just fueled their doubt and despair. This is because no one had actually seen Him yet that they knew of. Surely Jesus would have shown Himself to all these people if He were alive.
He never mentioned His death without the resurrection. Once again, the disciples didn't trust Jesus power until they saw it (like with the storm, Lazarus, etc.).
This shows how we need to absolutely trust God in what He says, even when we don't see it or understand it. If He said it, it will happen.
