Luke 5:6 - Additional Comments

Not just Simon, but his crew recast the nets.
As Christ was to Simon, Christ should be our guide while at work. We may get frustrated because events may not go our way, but in the end Christ has our best interest. Note that Christ probably caused the lack of success in the beginning just as much as he caused the success at the end - all to make Himself visible to us, to draw us to Him.
The number of fish they caught probably exceeded any amount they had ever caught, so not only was it a miracle that they caught fish on Jesus command after spending all night catching nothing, but the number of fish itself would have been seen as a miracle - enough fish to actually threaten both ships with sinking!
What miracle actually took place? What did Jesus cause to happen? The fish were first directed to stay away from the boats all night, and then they all were directed to be near the boats to be caught by the nets. God has dominion over the seas (Psalm 8:6-8), and is in control of nature. This miracle is a confirmation that Jesus teachings they just heard were from God.
Other miracles showing God's control of nature -
- Iron floated (2 Kings 6:5-6)
- 10 plagues of Egypt (river of blood, frogs, gnats, flies, sick cows, skin boils, hail, locusts, darkness, death of first born males - Exodus 7-12)
- Placement of a male and female pairs of all animals on the ark (Gen 7:7-9)
- Sea waters parted (Exodus 14:21, Joshua 3:14-16)
- Fire consumed the altar covered with water (1 Kings 18:38)
- Sun stood still (Josh 10:12-14)
- Jesus and Peter walked on water (Matt 14:25-29)
- Storm calmed (Mark 4:39)
- Fig tree withered (Matt 21:19)
