"To you who are ready for the truth, I say this: Love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer for that person. If someone slaps you in the face, stand there and take it. If someone grabs your shirt, giftwrap your best coat and make a present of it. If someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously.

Luke 6:27 - Additional Comments

(27-31) See 1 Pet 3:9-12. Our natural tendency is to retaliate, but we need to react supernaturally, as God would have us to do.
Note that Jesus had numerous enemies, not because of how He felt, but because of how they felt. You may have enemies not because of your attitude but because of theirs. If it is your attitude, you probably need to examine the motives of your attitude.
See also Prov 24:17-18, Prov 25:21-22.
How are we to treat our enemies?
1. Love your enemies (attitude)
2. Do good to those who hate you (action)
3. Bless those who curse you (wish the best for, speak well of)
4. Pray for those who mistreat you (wish God's best for them) (most of the time people don't set out to hurt us deliberately)
- Prayer keeps your attitude right and places the outcome in Gods hands
5. Refuse to retaliate (turning the cheek) (this defuses a hostile situation)
6. Give without expecting in return
- Everything I own belongs to God
- Give, don't lend (money, casserole dishes, a kindness that demands a thank you or a reciprocation)
