Malachi 3:1 - Additional Comments

This seems to be a direct answer to the rebellion and scoffing that God condemns in the previous chapters. The scoffers say in effect where is God, and here is answers, that His coming is near. So near that this is the last prophetic word you will hear before He comes. When He comes He will bring the judgment that the Israelites have defined and felt it would not come.
By these words the two Testaments are glued together. Here we are concluding with the telling of John and Jesus to come, and then the gospels begin with their arrival.
Mark 1:1-2 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the Prophets: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You."
In addition to here, the arrival of John is also foretold in Isaiah 40:3.
John will be sent, even though the Israelites did not send for him, nor would they have if they had known his cause.
Note that Malachi means "God's messenger", so both Malachi and John were given that title. John is, for God, "Malachi".
A prophet is to tell words about God and from God, primarily to bring people to God. That is what John did, for the purpose of preparing the way for Jesus.
Note that God had a method in His work. He had work to do in sending Jesus, but He also prepared the path for Jesus arrival. Luke 1:17 tells us John would go "to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
John is the messenger of Jesus, and Jesus is the Messenger of the covenant the new contract, the new promise... it is a new word, a new testament. Isaiah 49:8-10 says that not only is Jesus to bring the new covenant, He IS the new covenant.
