Mark 1:17 - Additional Comments

I wonder how much they heard of this. I expect they heard "follow me", and didn't pay much attention to the "and I will make you fishers of men". What could that mean? It is obvious to us, but may not have been to them. It meant they would become disciple makers. What is a disciple maker? See John 13:34-35.
But what an interesting promise. It was not a promise of the great benefits they would gain, but the great things they would give. Should this be how we preach the gospel - "Follow Jesus, and you will see the great benefit you can have in other people's lives." Jesus met each person where they were at. Apparently Peter and Andrew were spiritual and mature enough that Jesus could speak to them at this level.
Jesus probably had quite a following already, but he needed special followers - the men who would become his apostles.
Jesus would reiterate this same request at the end of His ministry on the earth, in Matt 28:19 - ""Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations". We may not have been called to be an apostle, but we are all called to be disciple makers. We are all called to bring people to Jesus, and to teach them how to follow Him. Jesus may have spoken those words directly to Peter and Andrew but today He wants the same of us - "follow Me and I will make you fishers of men". Are you involved in others' lives?
