Mark 1:7 - Additional Comments

John did not know who was the Messiah until the Spirit descended onto Jesus. See John 1:29-34, Matthew 3:16-17, Luke 3:21-22.
John did not know what to expect in Jesus. See Mat 11:1-6 and Luke 7:18-22. Jesus was not what he was expecting - that is why he had to ask. Yes, Jesus said of John that he was the greatest prophet to be born.
Yet, John did understand Jesus' great power and John's position before Him.
The attitude John has here is the same attitude with which we should approach Jesus - we are unworthy to even be in His presence. We need to be careful about feeling entitled to certain things, things we feel we have a right to. Even as Christians we might feel we have certain rights. We need to abdicate the thrown, and release everyhing of ours to Him, for we are unworthy.
