Back on the road, they set out for Jerusalem. Jesus had a head start on them, and they were following, puzzled and not just a little afraid. He took the Twelve and began again to go over what to expect next. "Listen to me carefully. We’re on our way up to Jerusalem. When we get there, the Son of Man will be betrayed to the religious leaders and scholars. They will sentence him to death. Then they will hand him over to the Romans, who will mock and spit on him, give him the third degree, and kill him. After three days he will rise alive."

Mark 10:32 - Additional Comments

They were travelling to Jerusalem. Jesus, as far as we know, rarely travelled to Jerusalem (see John 11:7-8). Probably the same for most of His disciples. This must have been a fearful thing for His disciples, for they knew the leaders of the Jews from Jerusalem had come all the way up to Galilee to defeat Jesus (Mark 7:1-2). It was about a 2 days journey from Galilee to Jerusalem.
Jesus was leading the team, walking ahead of them. They did not want to go, but they still were willing to follow Jesus. They still did not realize fully who Jesus was, or His power, because they were amazed that Jesus would go to Jerusalem, knowing the trouble they could have - and they were afraid, not realizing the protection He could give.
How did Jesus take them aside? They must have taken breaks along the way, and most certainly spent at least one night along the way. They had downtime, and during one of these times, Jesus separated Himself and the twelve apostles, because He had something to tell them. What He had to say would only make their fears worse.
