Mark 10:33 - Additional Comments

Jesus is the "Son of Man". This term is used 83 times in the gospels, and 14 times in Mark, including:
- Mark 2:10 - Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of Man, "who has power on earth to forgive sins"
- Mark 2:28 "Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath."
- Mark 8:31 Jesus had already mentioned the things to come for Him - "And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again."
- Mark 8:38 "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."
- Mark 9:31 And He told them again about these events - "For He taught His disciples and said to them, "The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day."
The disciples knew Jesus was talking about Himself.
Going to Jerusalem seemed to them like the worst possible decision. They likely were thinking "What is wrong with Jesus? Why is He taking us THERE?!" It is never easy to fully trust the decisions of Jesus and God, yet we need to learn from this. The decisions God makes is not always the decisions we would make, and it may not make sense at all to us, but they are perfect. We may even be praying for a different direction than what God wants (see what they asked for in vs 35 - that is an obvious one, but most of the time they are not so obvious). God will do what God needs to do. If He agrees that what the person prays for is a valuable path to take, then God will do what is asked. But often God needs to say to No to the prayer, and do what He needs to do.
The disciples' fear was that when they went to Jerusalem, they were certainly going to have trouble and be in danger. In these statements of the things to come, Jesus was confirming their worst fears. They are going into the lion's den, and it will be a disaster, at least from the human perspective. From God's perspective, nothing better has happened in history. (And we learned that over time.)
Like the country song says, "I thank God for unanswered prayers." We very likely won't understand, but we still need to trust Him.
Who were they going to confront in Jerusalem? Much of the same Jewish leaders who had come to Galilee to confront Jesus (Mark 7:1-2). But the prediction here is that they will be much more severe once the disciples are on the home turf of Pharisees and the scribes.
On top of their fear of the Jewish leaders, there was also a great fear of the Roman leaders, and here Jesus is predicting that not only will they have to deal with the Jewish leaders, but then the Roman ones as well.
This may be the only direct prophecy Jesus made of something near term, so the disciples may not have realized this was not just an expectation, but an actual prophesy. They certainly believed this could happen.
