Mark 12:12

And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.

They wanted to lynch him then and there but, intimidated by public opinion, held back. They knew the story was about them. They got away from there as fast as they could.

Once again (as in vs 11:32), they feared how the public would react against them if they arrested Jesus. What they decided to do was to find a way to arrest Him away from the public eyes. Once Jesus was arrested, how quickly the public turned against Him - much to the delight of the Jewish rulers.
