Mark 13:14 - Additional Comments

The 'abomination of desolation', meaning the abomination that desolates or appalls (Dan 11:30-31, 12:1, 12:11), has been applied to ancient events. Many Jews thought that Daniel's prophecy was fulfilled in 186 B.C. when Antiochus Epiphanes, the king of Syria, erected an idolatrous altar in the Temple of Jerusalem and sacrificed a pig there to the heathen god Jupiter Olympus. Others believe it referred to the entrance of Roman soldiers into the Holy Place before the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Nonetheless, this entire passage speaks of eschatological events, and the actions of the "man of sin", in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 corresponds to this description. See the note on 2 Thess 2:3.
