At first one might be surprised that many will be deceived, but when you look at how many people are drawn to false gospels today, you can see how this might happen. Why are people so easily deceived? People do no know the Bible, and therefore can be told almost anything that sounds close to the truth, and they accept it. People need to know the Bible well, and they need to know this chapter well, so they are not deceived.
This also clearly shows how we must have a personal understanding of the Bible, for if we go with what others say, we too may be swayed in the wrong direction. Check everything you hear from your teachers against Scripture.
Jesus says those who preach a different gospel are accursed (Gal 1:8, 2 Cor 11:4).
Note that not only will some people bring a false doctrine, but some will actually claim to be the Messiah returned and "many" will follow them.
