For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

Mark 13:8 - Additional Comments

Hear we see some of the events that must take place before "the end" - many wars, earthquakes, famines, troubles. It seems like this has been fulfilled, but maybe not to the extent as will be in the end times.
It calls these events "the beginnings of sorrows", indicating the sorrows will deepen, worse than these.
