It appears the apostles did not hang around Jesus all the time. It appears it was not unusual for them to come and go during the day, otherwise they would have suspected something with Judas.
Notice Judas did not happen to reveal something to the chief priests - he sought them out with the purpose of betraying Jesus. What do you suspect he was thinking? Maybe that he was with Jesus for selfish reasons, and he was seeing that Jesus was not going to establish a kingdom, and so he was possibly even bitter against Jesus?
