Jesus was at Bethany, a guest of Simon the Leper. While he was eating dinner, a woman came up carrying a bottle of very expensive perfume. Opening the bottle, she poured it on his head. Some of the guests became furious among themselves. "That’s criminal! A sheer waste! This perfume could have been sold for well over a year’s wages and handed out to the poor." They swelled up in anger, nearly bursting with indignation over her.

Mark 14:3 - Additional Comments

It was in Bethany that Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead (John 12:1).
(There are more details of this event with the woman in Luke 7:37-50). We do not know this woman's name, nor who she was. She was "woman in the city who was a sinner." She came to Jesus weeping, and wiped her tears off Jesus feet with her tears. Jesus saw her repentance and forgave her sins. We also see that Jesus allowed this as an anointing of his body to prepare for burial (vs 8).
