Mark 3:14 - Additional Comments

At my work, I have to hire people to build a team of the best that I can find. It's often difficult to determine what criteria to make this decision on. Of all the people in Israel, all the Jews, how did Jesus determine which 12 to "hire", to be His team. to carry out His incredibly grand mission? Are these the same 12 you would have chosen?
Jesus appointed, i.e. gave the office of apostleship, to the twelve. In the same way that in politics a person is appointed to a position, Jesus appointed the twelve.
They are listed in 4 places: Matthew 10:2-4, Mark 3:16-19, Luke 6:12-19, and Acts 1:13.
Peter had a wife, who traveled with him in his work as an apostle. He was a native of Bethsaida, and had a home in Capernaum. He was a partner in fishing with James and John. He often was the spokesman for the 12. He laid the foundation for the Judean Church. Peter, James, and John were the 3 of the inner circle of apostles.
John - son of Zebedee and Salome (was probably the sister of Jesus' mother Mary). Jesus nicknamed him a "Son of Thunder". He was "the disciple whom Jesus loved." He was a fisherman. He wrote the book of John.
Matthew - was a Publican, a tax gatherer. He wrote a gospel. He's also called Levi.
James - older brother of John, also called a "Son of Thunder" (with John). He was the first to die, killed by Herod in 44 AD. Most of the 12 died as martyrs. He was a fisherman.
Andrew - of Bethsaida. John and he were Jesus' first converts. He brought Peter to Christ. Tradition says he eventually preached in Russia.
Philip - of Bethsaida. Brought Nathaniel to Christ.
Bartholomew - sirname of Nathaniel, who was of Cana.
Thomas - a twin. He was very cautious, gloomy.
James - son of Alphaeus. Called "The Little". Tradition has it he later preached in Egypt.
Thaddaeus - same as Judas son of James, also called Lebbaeus.
Simon - the Zealot. Zealots were direct opposites of Publicans. Interesting Jesus chose a Publican and a Zealot.
Judas Iscariot - of Kerioth, a town of Judah. The only apostle not from Galilee. Dishonest, the betrayer.
