Mark 7:4

And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

In addition to the washing of hands in a very precise way, they had similar laws for many other things. Note that these things were not wrong if the Jews did them, but Jesus was saying that they were not bound to do them, that it was not sin to avoid doing them.
