Matthew 1:22 - Additional Comments

The book of Matthew was written to the Jews, so it heavily emphasizes the fact that Jesus is the Messiah that was spoken of in Old Testament prophesies. In fact, Matthew quoted from the O.T. more often than the other gospels combined.
Some other O.T. prophesies and their exact fulfillment:
- Born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2, Matthew 2:1)
- Presented with gifts by kings and worship Him (Psa 72:10-11, Matt 2:1,11)
- Came out of Egypt (Hosea 11:1, Matt 2:14-15,19-20)
- Enter Jerusalem on a donkey (Zech 9:9, Luke 19:35-37)
- Betrayed by a friend (Psa 41:9, Matt 10:4)
- Sold for 30 pieces of silver (Zech 11:12, Matt 26:15)
- Did not answer his accusers (Isaiah 53:7, Matt 27:12)
- Wounded and beaten (Isaiah 53:5; Matt 27:26)
- Hit and Spat at (Isaiah 50:6, Matt 26:67)
- Crucified with thieves (Isaiah 53:12, Matt 27:38)
- He was pierced (Zech 12:10, John 19:34)
- Several events at his death (Psa 22:16-18, Matt 27:38, Luke 23:33, John 19:23)
- Buried in a rich man's grave (Isaiah 53:9, Matt 27:57-60)
- His Resurrection (Psalm 16:10, Acts 2:31)
The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in a cave in Qumram in 1947, probably created by a community of Jewish Essenes. Approximately 850 different manuscripts were discovered in 11 different caves between 1947 and 1956.
Before the discovery of these scrolls, the oldest complete copy of the Old Testament in Hebrew was Codex Babylonicus Petropalitanus from A.D. 1008, more than 1,400 years after the Old Testament was completed. Fragments from the Dead Sea Scrolls now closed the gap by a thousand years and left the world waiting to see if the text had been transmitted accurately. The answer was a resounding yes.
Among the fragments discovered are complete copies or parts of every Old Testament book except Esther, and the variations in the text after a thousand years of copying are practically non-existent.
Radiocarbon measurements of the Dead Sea Scrolls made by scientists at the National Science Foundation Arizona Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) Laboratory at The University of Arizona in Tucson on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority agree with paleographic dates (dates based on the study of ancient writings) of most texts from the Judean Desert.
Based on paleographics, the Dead Sea Scrolls generally are considered to have been copied by the Qumran community, identified by most scholars as the Essenes, who lived between the mid-third century BC and 68 AD, when the Romans annihilated the Qumran settlement.
The UA team radiocarbon dated
- the famous Book of Isaiah scroll at between 335 BC and 122 BC. Paleographers had dated this scroll at between 150 - 125 BC.
- the commentary on the Psalms (UA radiocarbon dated at between 22 AD and 78 AD)
- the Messianic Apocalypse that paleographers date at 100 BC to 80 BC (UA radiocarbon dated at between 35 BC and 59 AD)
- the Exodus scroll written in ancient Hebrew script that paleographers date at between 100 BC and 25 BC (UA radiocarbon tests date it between 159 BC and 16 AD)
- an inscribed round leather patch with holes that was attached to the Exodus scroll. Paleographers date the patch between 50 BC and 50 AD (UA radiocarbon dated the patch at from 98 BC to 13 AD).
So, we have verified that the prophesies concerning Jesus were written before his birth.
