Many receive Jesus for selfish reasons -- the masses often wanted Jesus to 'feed them evermore of this bread' (John 6:34). They did not really want a Messiah, but a meal ticket. They were seeking earthly gain. It was only when the real reason for Christ's coming was made clear that these hasty followers went away, never again to follow Jesus (John 6:60-66).
