Matthew 16:16 - Additional Comments

Why is this so important? Because our entire faith stands or falls based on this single issue -- whether Jesus was the Messiah or not. And it was His resurrection that proved that. So our faith rides on whether Jesus resurrected or not. See 1 Cor 15:13-14.
Note that in 16:13 Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of Man (humbling Himself), but here Peter calls Him the Son of the living God, exalting Jesus.
They probably did not fully understand what it meant at this point for Jesus to be the Christ, but they knew partially, for they had left all to follow Him.
We partially know what it means for Jesus to be the Christ, and spend our entire life trying to understand it better.
