While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Matthew 17:5 - Additional Comments

This shows how most Jews viewed the old prophets, how they revered them. But God was saying the prophets are not the ones to be revered, but only Christ.
We may hold up the great saints, but we must be careful that only Jesus is the focus of our worship.
Why does God say "Hear Him"? He is saying pay attention to His words, for they are the words of life (John 6:68), and Jesus is the Word of life (1 John 1:1).
