Matthew 2:2 - Additional Comments
The term for wise men in verse 1 means "oriental sorcerors", or ones who conform to the religion of Persia. How amazing that these men from outside the Jewish religion were able to recognize the coming of the Messiah, yet none of the Jews did (besides Simeon and Anna in Luke 2:25-38).
So what brought them here? They studied the Old Testament and its prophesies, and knew about the One to come who would be the King of the Jews (Psalm 2:6, Isaiah 9:6-7, Isaiah 32:1-2, Jer 23:5, Zec 9:9).
Somehow they knew a star would announce Him, and that they could follow it (Numbers 24:17, Isaiah 60:3).
Amazingly, they came to worship the Jewish Messiah. See notes on worship on verse 11.
What title did the Magi assign Jesus? "King" of the Jews.
- The Jews had been kingless since the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC.
- They surely knew Jer 23:5 - "Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I shall raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king."
- The word used for king here is "basileus", as in 1 Tim 6:15 - Jesus was the King of Kings ("basileus" of "basileuo") and Lord of Lords ("kurios" of "kurieuo")
- "basileus" denotes one who has the foundation of power; who is sovereign, who has supreme authority
- "basileuo" denotes a ruler
- "kurios" denotes one who has supreme authority
- "kurieuo" denotes one who rules
