Matthew 8:3 - Additional Comments
Since leprosy is so horrible and very infectious, once someone gets the disease, no one ever touches them again. They are completely void of human touch for the rest of their lives, a terrible emotional pain on top of the physical pain. So, look at Jesus' first response to the leper - He touched him! What an amazing show of affection and value to the person! Jesus didn't typically respond with touch, but Jesus knew this man's need, both emotional and physical, and met both needs. He can heal both our physical and emotional needs.
Note that with the physical healing, the man would be free once again to go back to his family and enjoy their affection. No longer would he be an outcast, isolated from the people he loved.
Why did Jesus cleanse the leper? To prove 2 things:
1. God is able to help you. If He can cure the body of an incurable disease, He has the power to cleanse the soul. Sin is an incurable spiritual condition that only God can cure.
2. God is willing to help you. He made it clear that "without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5), and we can do all things through Him (Phil 4:13).. Jesus is telling us He knows we can't go thru this life on our own, and that He wants to help us.
Remember that God wants to give you the desire of your heart if you delight in Him and fear Him (Psalm 37:4, 145:19), and if we abide in Him, we can ask whatever we wish and it will be granted (John 15:7). I expect Jesus saw these traits in the leper.
Note that to delight in God, we cannot delight in money, for the two cannot co-exist (Matt 6:24).
God wants us to have the abundant life (John 10:10).
And, as a father gives good gifts to his children, how much more God will gift us good gifts (Matt 7:9-11).
