Nehemiah 1:11 - Additional Comments
As the king's cupbearer, no one was closer to the king, except his family. A common method for assassination in those days was poisoning, since it was so difficult to get near the king. The cupbearer would taste all the king's food before he ate, to make sure it was not poisoned. The cupbearer was the one person the king had to trust more than any other person, so Nehemiah had to have the character worthy of this trust. His character was, ahead of time, ready for honorable use - first as the cupbearer, then as the rebuilder of Jerusalem and governor of Judah. If an need for someone of character came up, would you be ready? You need to develop your character with God's help to be ready.
To develop this character, Nehemiah had to never compromise. One compromise, and he would not have either gotten the position. God tells us that the man of God is to be above reproach. We are to never compromise, never accept moments of weakness. Never accept that moments of weakness are acceptable. If you accept it before it happens, you have planned for failure. Plan to succeed!
