Slavery: In the first-century Roman Empire.
" Millions of slaves throughout the empire, approximately sixty million slaves where the total population was about one hundred twenty million.
" Many slaveholders had ten or more, and not a few owned hundreds.
" Slaves were composed of the people of Rome's many conquered territories from the East to the West.
" Roman law governing slavery was quite severe toward the slave.
o Considered nothing more than pieces of property to be bought, sold, and used for any purpose whatsoever.
o Life was not easy for slaves. They were treated worse than an enemy. They were subject to the whim of their master. They could be beaten for minor offenses and even crucified for running away.
Compared to the Old Testament law about treatment of slaves.
" They were treated like household members (Lev 25:53)
" became partakers of the covenant (Gen 17:27).
" freed during the sabbatical year (Ex 21:2).
" Harming a slave resulted in his freedom (Ex 21:26-27),
" if someone killed a slave he would be severely punished (Ex 21:20).
" An escaped slave was to be neither hunted nor returned to his master (Deut 23:15-16)
