Philippians 1:12 - The Message

I want to report to you, friends, that my imprisonment here has had the opposite of its intended effect. Instead of being squelched, the Message has actually prospered. All the soldiers here, and everyone else, too, found out that I’m in jail because of this Messiah. That piqued their curiosity, and now they’ve learned all about him. Not only that, but most of the followers of Jesus here have become far more sure of themselves in the faith than ever, speaking out fearlessly about God, about the Messiah.

Philippians 1:12 - Additional Comments

Paul is probably in the Roman prison at this time. Paul is saying that God has actually used his seemingly negative circumstances for the advancement of the gospel. Many Christians who may have remained silent were now bold to speak for Christ (verse 14). Man plans his ways, but the Lord knows what is best, even though we may not understand. The Philippian church must have assumed this was completely a negative situation, as if this was a defeat, but Paul turns it around and tells what a success it has been.
Do we dwell on the negative, or look to see how God is doing great things in circumstances that may appear negative? Reminder of God's priorities -- relationship with Him, our character, then our circumstances.
