Philippians 3:1 - Additional Comments

He says "finally", meaning he is ready to conclude the letter. In his closing, the last and possibly most important point he wants to make is for them to rejoice in the Lord. We see a clear picture in this chapter that sacrifices may be made for the sake of knowing Christ. How else could one make these sacrifices unless you have the joy of the Lord? The joy of the Lord is our strength - Neh 8:10. You serve whatever you can be passionate about, can rejoice in, whether family, sports, money, the Lord, etc.
We need to encourage each other to rejoice in the Lord. This isn't "don't worry, be happy!" We are weak, and can't be the source of true peace or happiness - it is only in the Lord (see notes on Eccl 8:15). How can we "rejoice in the Lord"? Phil 4:6-7 says we receive peace through prayer with thanksgiving, in an active relationship with God. Joy comes with prayer, thanksgiving, total reliance on Him, resting in Him, looking forward with anticipation of everything He is and does for us. The deepest joy comes in being the closest to God's will, and God's ultimate purpose for us is to glorify God. The more we glorify God, the more joy we have.
Why does Paul write this? For him it is not tedious, for his joy, his passion, is for their success in God, and anything, even in repetition, to accomplish this task is fulfilling.
For those receiving this letter, hearing it again is "safe". What is safety? Protection from undesirable results. Hearing it again is safe, for it may promote desirable results. And this is why God's principles can continue to be repeated - for to the minister it is not tedious, and for the listener it is safe.
