Romans 1:21 - Additional Comments

This implies that we all start somewhat with a knowledge of God and a desire for Him. But because they did not glorify Him, nor were they thankful to Him for everything, they deteriorate. Their thoughts go from being noble to being useless. Their hearts go from being drawn to things of wisdom to being drawn to foolish things. And their hearts go from following the light and righteousness to falling into darkness and sin. They get to a state (verse 22) where they think they are wise with their thinking and their words, but in reality it is simply foolishness. Instead of aligning with God and His majesty (verse 23), they align with animals, and bring themselves from greatness to being pitiful. Without God as an active part of your life, this is the inevitable path we take.
As a result (verse 24, 26), God no longer holds onto them and fights for them. He releases them to their own desires. In their unclean and vile passions and lusts, their lives become lives of dishonor.
Their state is that they had the truth, but gave it up for a lie. They gave up God, who should be worshipped, to a worship of the things that perish and are failing and weak, the things of nature. Instead of the One who creates the things of the world, they worship the things of the world themselves (verse 25).
They have exchanged the blessings of the One who is blessed with waste and vanity.
