Romans 12:4 - The Message

In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ’s body, let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t.

Romans 12:4 - New American Standard Bible

For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,

Romans 12:4 - Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

Romans 12:4 - Additional Comments

See 1 Cor 12 and 14, particularly 1 Cor 12:20-27.
It is critical that we carefully consider what our expectations are for each other, not requiring that each person should have to attain to the same responsibilities or functions within a church, and one is not above the other because they can do more or influence more. That is not how God designed it. Each person is given a perfect and complete set of talents and gifts, as God designed it for them.
It is critical that we understand that every person is necessary to fully accomplish God's work. Without each individual, the church is lame, is not the body God intended it to be (1 Cor 12:21-25). Example in the human body - the hypothalamus is a region of the brain comprising 1/300th of the brain, yet it regulates body temperatures, blood pressure, heartbeat, metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, and sugar levels in the blood.
This also implies we cannot operate independently of each other - we cannot function the way God intended on our own. It is critical that we join into the body and function with the body.
We do not need to talk and act the same. The hand isn't to look and sound like the foot.
But this means if you are absent, if God has things He wants you to be doing, and you are not making an effort to do what He wants, the body is suffering. Every person is important and necessary to God. Goed has designed our gifts to fit together with each other as puzzle pieces fit together. And, what happens when a piece is missing? Ever seen a puzzle missing a piece? Not good!
