Zephaniah 1:1 - Additional Comments
Amon was the king of Judah and son of Manasseh of Judah. He began his reign at the age of 22, and reigned 642-640 BC. He restored idolatry, and set up the images which his father had cast down. Zephaniah (1:4; 3:4, 3:11) describes his reign as marked by moral depravity. He was assassinated (2 Kings 21:18-26: 2 Chronicles 33:20-25) by his own servants, who conspired against him.
Josiah ("supported of the Lord") was king of Judah from 640-609 BC. His grandfather was King Manasseh, who had turned from the Jewish religion, even adapting the Temple for worship that was considered idolatrous by faithful Jews. The chief sources of his reign are 2 Kings 22-23, and 2 Chronicles 34-35.
Zephaniah prophesies during the reign of Josiah about the penalties from the sins during the reign of Amon.
