John 20:31

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Acts 10:43 says "whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins."
John has written his gospel for this purpose, to tell and show others that this single this is what they are to do. Belief in Him is simple -- what to do is described in this 1 verse. Yet, complex, for the entire gospel explains what it means.
